3 Small steps toward healthy eating habits
Summer is right around the corner, meaning gym traffic is starting to pick back up after the New Year’s rush died down. While hitting the gym is an important part of getting in shape for the beach, if you don’t step up your nutrition game, you won’t see results. We wanted to share some of our favorite tips for healthy eating. We’re not talking about sticking to a strict diet and counting macros; we’re just talking about a few simple steps to form healthy eating habits.
Stop eating when you’re full.
Sounds simple enough, right? But the majority of us eat plenty more than what our body actually needs. Start by serving yourself smaller portions. It’s easy to eat what’s on your plate, so start by cutting down on portion size. Slow down and enjoy your meal. When we feel full, it’s because our brain is reacting to chemicals released from eating. This process takes your brain about 20 minutes to react. By slowing down, you’ll give your body the chance to feel full when you’re actually full and not over-stuffed.
No more pop.
For many people, this step can be incredibly difficult. The carbonation, caffeine, and sugars in pop can make them highly addictive and puts the body through withdrawal when you cut it out. A can of coca-cola, for example, has 39 grams of sugars. Many people will go through severe headaches when they try to cut down on their pop intake and give up quickly. We recommend cutting it out gradually to help your body out of dependency. Try coffee or tea for a healthier way to pick up some caffeine. For people that can make this change, they tend to see results very quickly.
Drink more water.
Water helps the body in many ways, but it’s also an amazing tool for fat loss. Drinking water before you eat can help you feel fuller, making you eat less. Drinking water is also helpful for people who eat out of boredom. Anytime you feel like snacking, drink some water first. This will help you determine if you’re actually hungry or just want to eat out of habit. Drinking more water can help you lose water weight. By providing your body with a regular supply of water, it will get rid of excess water weight. Water also plays an important role in your metabolism. Without adequate water, your metabolism cannot run as efficiently.
Combining these three simple steps with your regular workouts will have you ready for summer in no time! We recommend getting healthy with a friend; having someone to hold you accountable is one of the best ways to reach your goals.
