Keto flu: symptoms and how to get through it
The Ketogenic diet is a high fat, low carb diet with the intention of changing your body’s fuel source from glucose (sugar) to fat. When some people try to go keto, they experience what’s referred to as the keto flu, or carb flu. This is simply the body’s reaction to changing its fuel source. Just as the body goes through withdrawal from an addictive substance, it goes through withdrawal from carbohydrates.
Keto flu symptoms often include fatigue, aches, nausea, dizziness, and irritability. When these symptoms kick in, many people quit Keto, but if you can stick it out, the benefits will be well worth it. For most people, these symptoms last only a week or less. You are more susceptible to keto flu if you eat a diet that is high in feigned sugar and processed food. Many studies show that sugar is more addictive than most drugs; giving it up may be difficult, but well worth it.
We believe that the ketogenic diet is one of the best for weight loss and overall health. If you’re giving it a try but the keto flu has you second-guessing your decision, don’t give up just yet. Here are some remedies to get you past the carb withdrawal phase!
Going keto means cutting out some starchy fruits and veggies that are a great natural source of electrolytes. This can result in some of the fatigue, dizziness, and muscle cramping that comes with keto flue. A great way to overcome this is to take a daily electrolyte supplement. Be sure to find one that doesn’t have sugar. Zero calorie sweeteners like Stevia are fine. You can even make your own by mixing water with sea salt and a fresh squeezed lemon.
Stay hydrated. This can help deter headaches and boost your energy when you’re feeling low. Always take a water bottle with you wherever you go. If you aren’t a frequent water drinker, set an alarm or reminder on your phone throughout the day. Keeping your body hydrated can help alleviate symptoms.
Get the best of both worlds and drink bone broth. Bone broth is a great way to increase your water intake as well as restore electrolytes like sodium and potassium. Kettle and Fire Bone Broth has several different flavors that fit perfectly with the ketogenic diet. Bone broth has plenty of other benefits like providing collagen for your joint health. When in doubt, eat more fat. Increasing your fat intake can speed up your transition away from glucose. It can also help with all those carb cravings (pizza, pasta, donuts...). So instead of dreaming about carbs, have a bulletproof coffee or cook up some bacon—keto flu won’t last forever. Power through those symptoms and you’ll be a fat-burning machine in no time!
